Has the Heat Got to you ? - Some Steps to Stay Cool

Summers have arrived and the sun seems to be depriving us of the moisture
beneath our skin. During this period, we might commonly experience our body
temperatures rise and suffer acidity, bloating and lethargy.

Our body adapts to the temperature outside. When it's hot, blood circulation
towards the surface of the skin increases to dissipate body heat and make it
cool down. In the process, you end up losing moisture.

So it is important to drink fluids to aid the body's cooling mechanisms. If
the water intake is inadequate, body temperature can soar and even lead to a
heat stroke. It'd also be wise to eat foods that keep the body cool. Reduce
body heat Foods that help you bring down the heat include:

*Sabza: Seeds of sabza are a natural cooling agent. They need to be soaked
in water for half-an-hour after which they swell up and look gelatinous.
They can be added to cold milk with rose syrup. It can cause water retention
for some.

*Onions: Raw onions are great to cool the system. Have them as part of a
vegetable salad or chutney.

* Mango: Raw mangoes are ideal to prevent sunstrokes and diarrhea during
summer. They are a source of Vitamin C and prevent the loss of excessive
salts and iron from the body.

* Barley: Barley can be used to make gruels and porridges. First, make a
healthy barley drink by boiling barley grains along with rock sugar and
pandan leaf (a Thai aromatic leaf). Strain the liquid, cool and serve with
slices of fresh lime.

*Spices: Spices such as poppy seeds, cardamom, sandalwood, fennel seeds and
saffron are great cooling agents. A sandalwood drink enhanced with cardamom,
saffron, saunf and rock salt is great.

*Raisins: Soaked black raisins are beneficial when had with an equal mix of
cold milk and water.

*Gulkand: This cooling preserve made from rose petals and sugar fights
fatigue, lethargy, muscular aches and heat-related conditions. be wary of
the sugar though.

*Fuel up with fluids: Drink more than 8-10 glasses of water everyday. You
can even have coconut water, fresh fruit juices, buttermilk or water
flavored with mint leaves.

*Fruits and vegetables: Most fruits and vegetables including cucumber, water
melon, jackfruit, grapes and pineapple help hydrate.

* Drink two tsp of amla juice with half a glass of pomegranate juice.

*Try to follow a vegetarian diet.

* Eating too many mangoes increases body heat. Try to consume not more than
one a day.

* Avoid using garam masala, methi seeds, mustard seeds, red chilies in your
daily cooking as these aggravate heat symptoms. Steer clear of these to
Maximize the benefits of cooling foods by avoiding these:

* Cut down on caffeinated beverages. Caffeine and alcohol make you urinate
more, thereby dehydrating your body and increasing your susceptibility to
heat strokes.

* Alcohol dissipates immense heat and must not be had during the summer
season. Either avoid it completely or drink with plenty of water.

* Avoid sour, spicy and oily foods. Cut down on spices, cheese, fermented
foods, vinegar and excess oil.

* Avoid mutton, chicken and fish gravy that appears greasy. Papaya, too, is
known to heat up the body. Change yourself A few such modifications in your
lifestyle will save you from the onslaught of the sun:

* Restrict outdoor activities to early mornings or late evenings.

* Wear comfortable cotton clothes to aid absorption of sweat. Use an
umbrella to cover your head when you go out.

Eight young students represent India in Intel's ISEF - SiliconIndia

Bangalore: Eight young students who have been successful at the India Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science (IRIS) with their innovative science and technology projects will now represent India in the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in San Jose, California from May 9-14, 2010.

The Intel ISEF is a program organized by Society for Science & the Public (SSP). With a gathering of over 1500 young students from more than 50 countries, representing more than 1200 projects, it is an opportunity for the best young minds in the world to come together to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge projects, and compete for more than $4 million in awards and scholarships. The Intel ISEF winners are judged on their creative ability and scientific thought, as well as the thoroughness, skill, and clarity shown in their projects.

At the national level, IRIS encourages only research based science projects. The programme calls for submission of project synopsis by August 31st every year, followed by an evaluation by the Scientific Resource Committee (SRC) for selection. For instance, in 2009, a total of 82 projects across Category I (Stand 5th-8th) and II (Stand 9th - 12th) were selected. These projects then compete at the National Fair of IRIS which is held in November-December. Amongst the winners of this fair, a group of students are then chosen to represent the country at ISEF. This team undergoes three coaching camps and the final team comprising of 4 individuals and two teams of two members each participate at ISEF. Nearly 1200 synopses were received in 2009 and from them, 82 projects were selected to participate at the National Fair, held at Sattva Vikas School, Ahmedabad in November.

Eight students (Four in the individual category and two each in the Team category) with their winning science and engineering projects will now travel to the U.S. to compete against more than 1500 other high school students from over 50 countries around the world. During the week-long Science and Engineering Fair the students will have the opportunity to meet leading scientists and exchange ideas on various evolving topics in Science, Research and Technology.

"The success of these students reveals their scientific aptitude, research acumen and innovation in the country. The finalists from India demonstrate the capability of this country to cultivate the next generation of innovators, scientists and entrepreneurs," said Rahul Bedi, Director, Corporate Affairs, Intel South Asia.

Borrow & buy harassment Trader pays back lender bank in the same coin

A businessman fed up of being harassed by debt collectors because of a wrong entry in his loan repayment record held three of them hostage until the bank clarified in writing that he wasn’t a defaulter.

Subhashis Chatterjee, 35, told Metro after the six-hour drama on Tuesday evening that he decided to take the “extreme step” after several intimidating calls from a loan recovery agency hired by ICICI Bank.

“The callers claimed that I hadn’t paid my personal loan EMI for March 2007, along with some extra charges for defaulting on repayment. I told them that I had documents to prove them wrong but they wouldn’t listen,” he said.

Subhashis, a resident of Sarojini Pally in Barasat, had taken a personal loan of Rs 50,000 from ICICI Bank in January last year to expand his air-conditioning and fridge repairing business. The EMI was fixed at Rs 2,406 for 36 months.

The businessman, who had opted for electronic clearance instead of giving post-dated cheques, defaulted on the second EMI because of insufficient funds in his account. “The bank sent a collection agent to my home a few days later and I paid the EMI in cash,” he said.

Subhashis thought the matter was settled but a representative of the bank called two months later to say that he had “missed” the EMI for March. When he went to the Gurusaday Road branch of ICICI Bank to enquire why he was being harassed, it turned out that the culprit was the collection agent.

“The loan account number he wrote in the receipt was not mine. The bank rectified the error and assured me that I would not receive any more calls,” Subhashis recalled.

But an official of ICICI Bank called Subhashis again a few days later and requested him to visit the branch for a “clarification”. On reaching the Gurusaday Road branch, he was asked to speak to a bank official in New Delhi over phone. “I had to repeat what I had said earlier, after which the official said there would be no more confusion.”

Subhashis continued paying his EMIs — 21 out of 36 till this month — and forgot about the dispute until a collection agent called on October 17 and said he owed the bank an extra Rs 4,300, payable immediately. Another caller said the outstanding amount was Rs 1,906.

More calls followed over the next few days, some of them allegedly threatening ones. “A couple of callers even abused my family members,” Subhashis said.

After consulting some friends, he decided to teach them a lesson. When a collection agent called on Monday, Subhashis asked him to come to his residence on Tuesday and take the “outstanding amount” in cash.

The collector arrived at Subhashis’s home around noon and immediately wrote a receipt. Subhashis showed him his bank statement and the receipt for the March ’07 EMI that he paid in cash but the collector wasn’t convinced. “You can call the police or go to court but I won’t leave without the payment,” Subhashis quoted him as saying.

Subhashis and his friends, who had arrived by then, took the collector to a room and asked him to call his senior. When two more representatives of the bank, one of them a supervisor, arrived an hour later, they were asked to speak to the bank and ask for the complete repayment statement.

The trio were allowed to go only after a bank statement was emailed to the supervisor and he took a printout from a nearby cyber café to give Subhashis.

A spokesman for ICICI Bank admitted that Subhashis had been unnecessarily harassed but said his method of getting justice was illegal. “We could have lodged a police complaint but didn’t do so because he apologised for holding our men hostage.”

Where should these Satyam hopefuls go?

Hyderabad: G Srikanth, a young engineer from Siddipet village, has decided to go village to take up his father's profession, agriculture. Srikanth is one of the many students, who got the offer letter by the pre-scam Satyam Computer Services (now Mahindra Satyam), but is still waiting to get the joining letter.

Till few days ago, Srikanth used to work as an assistant professor in an engineering college at Siddipet, which paid him Rs 8,000 per month, just enough to repay the EMI on his education loan from SBI. "After repaying that debt, I quit teaching. If I can't pursue the career I aspired to, I'd rather help my parents on the farm," said he to Sunitha Natti of The New Indian Express.

Another Satyam hopeful, K Shiva Prasad is reluctant to visit his village Vakadu in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh. The situation for both Prasad and his father is grimy, as they are thinking how will they pay the loan amount of Rs.1.5 lakh. Prasad had got the offer letter by Satyam Computer Services in November 2007. That time he had thought that his family's days of hardship had finally ended, but two years later, he's still waiting to get the joining letter.

Both Prasad and Srikanth were students of Jawahar Knowledge Centre (JKC), the state government's soft-skills training programme. They were to be invited to join the company's payrolls after course completion in May 2008. But they are still unemployed, caught in a twilight zone.

During November 2007 and September 2008, over 6,000 from Andhra Pradesh were given offers. Before the scam, Mahindra Satyam, led by Ramalinga Raju, was one of the top recruiters. However, that equation has now changed under the Mahindras' management. During 2009-10, Infosys replaced Satyam as the largest recruiter hiring 504, while Mahindra Satyam BPO took just 12. In contrast, the pre-scam Satyam hired 517 (and Infosys 277) the previous year.

Currently, Mahindra Satyam is planning to hire freshers for its 4,000-seat IT SEZ in Gachibowli. The company also said that students with offer letters will be given first preference.

Infy employees vent anger on HR policies in forums

Bangalore: In the last few months, it has not been smooth ride for Infosys leadership, as the employees of the company are not happy with the new HR issues. These employees have been putting thousands of negative reactions to HR head's blog postings in the company's intranet 'Sparsh'.

Talking to Business Standrad, Nandita Gurjar, who is HR Head at Infosys, said that she receives many negative blogs on daily basis. She said, "We realize that they should not take names and make personal attacks. But sometimes, from their perspective, they are in so much pain that they need your attention and which is why they make personal attacks. You can't react to it, because I don't think they are talking personally about you, as long as they are talking about a position. It's part of the game."

Earlier, these employees used to show their anger on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Later on company provided them blogging platform on its intranet. Now with seeing the number of comments increasing drastically on daily basis, the company has set up a team of six people to moderate the blogs and 'My voice', the dedicated website the company has developed to seek the opinion of employees on important policy matters.

Basically the extremism started after the company launched its new changed management system christened 'iRace', to remap the technology skills of the employees. This initiative, which aimed at "improving the technology depth" of the software professionals, reportedly had affected over 4,000 employees, who felt it was blocking their career growth.

Since iRace was introduced in the company, Gurjar writes blogs and changes topics every Friday. The employees are free to participate and give their comments. Every day, the blog is getting around 30,000 hits.

Indian techie builds low cost robot for household chores

Bangalore: A Bangalore based Microsoft techie, Ramaprasad has built robots that can cook, keep the house safe when he is away and help him spend his leisure the way he likes it best. Also, these robots tell him news that interests him, and show him ads of products he would like to buy.

Talking to Bangalore Mirror on the sideline of Microsoft Tech Ed being organized in Bangalore, Ramaprasad said that it is awesome letting smart robots do all the humdrum work at home. What thrills him even more is that he made all the robots, which he calls Buddyhomes. The software, hardware, design and implementation are all his.

For the past 15 day, Buddyhomes do every work for Ramaprasad. They wake him up with an alarm. If he does not wake up, they pour some water over his head! He goes for his breakfast. He puts the noodles into a pan on the stove. Then he leaves because he wants to read the newspaper. Meanwhile, a buddyhome stirs the noodles. In two minutes, he gets the message that noodles is ready. He scans the newspapers. He is interested in Lalu Prasad Yadav. He smiles. Immediately, the screen on the wall before him shows the latest available news about Lalu.

Building these robots with software including cloud computing, Microsoft.Net, Visual Studio 2010 and Open Computer Vision, Ramaprasad said that the technology to build the robots is 'very simple'. It has three webcams and a screen, gesture-recognising software, and hardware from SP Road near Town Hall. "It costs me just Rs.16,000. It is so reasonable because most parts are from SP Road. The motors, chips, atmega, and H bridges are all from SP Road."

Now Ramaprasad is trying to finetune the robots to do wet mops of the floor, and do more sophisticated cooking. In particular, he wants to pursue gesture-reading robots because he sees great potential in it for the hearing- and speech-impaired. "I think it is possible to interpret gestures, and turn that into voice. Think how it can help those who cannot speak," said Ramaprasad, who studied in College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai, and has a BE in computer science and engineering from Anna University.

India among top 10 pharma markets by 2020

New Delhi: India will join the league of top 10 global pharmaceuticals markets in terms of sales by 2020 with the total value reaching $50 billion by then, according to a report. The report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said that the country's population is growing rapidly, as is its economy-creating a large middle-class that can to afford western medicines.

An ageing population together with increase in problems associated with cardio-vascular disorders and central nervous system will lead to higher demand for drugs, the report said. Around $70 billion worth of drugs are expected to go off patent in the U.S. over the next three years and India is capable of manufacturing a substantial share of the products. Several Indian firms have already entered into research partnerships with multinationals - Dr Reddy's Laboratories Torrent have joined hands with Novartis while Ranbaxy has formed alliances with GSK and Schwarz Pharmaceuticals, the report added.

India, which produces more than 20 percent of the world's generics, is likely to become a competitor of global pharma in some key areas, and a potential partner in others. It has a considerable contract manufacturing expertise, the report says. "Global players in the pharmaceutical industry are seeing immense prospects in the Indian market due to its sheer demographic profile. India could be the most populous country in the world by 2050 and is now making its mark as a growing market," Sujay Shetty of PWC said.

Mahindra Satyam to hire 4,000 associates this quarter

Hyderabad: Mahindra Satyam Tuesday launched a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) here on the first anniversary of acquisition of scam-hit Satyam Computers by Tech Mahindra, and said it would complete restatement of accounts by the end of June as per schedule.

India's fourth largest software services firm said it planned to hire 4,000 associates this quarter. At present it has a headcount of 25,000.

Satyam had a headcount of 53,000 in January last year when its founder and chairman B. Ramalinga Raju confessed to a Rs.78 billion accounting fraud.

The SEZ at Infocity Campus in Hitec City was launched in the presence of Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, Secretary R. Bandyopadhyay and Mahindra and Mahindra vice-chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra.

Spread over 26 acres, the first phase of the campus will be ready for occupation within the next six months and will seat around 5,000 associates.

Analysts said since the firm cannot move its workforce to SEZ, it would have to recruit associates for the same. A bulk of 4,000 associates planned to be recruited this quarter would be for SEZ.

Tech Mahindra was reported to be facing problems in restatement of accounts as all the records were in the custody of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). But company chief executive Vineet Nayyar told reporters: "I am sure we will be able meet the deadline".

Earlier, addressing the associates, Khurshid said that his ministry would continue to help the firm meet the challenges. "This transition to success shows what a company can do and what India can do," he said.

"There is a three-year transformation plan. This is a journey in which government will continue to participate. It is only one year. We need another two years to level out some operational matters," said Mahindra Satyam chief executive C.P. Gurnani.

He claimed that the company had retained almost all the clients but declined to give any details about its performance in the last one year.

Gurnani said much of the reorganisation in the company happened on June 20 last year when 14 layers of management were reduced to seven.

Anand Mahindra said the company should not remain at number four position but should aim to be on top.

Infy to hire 30,000, promotions for 7500

Bangalore: Infosys Technologies, one of India's top software services exporter, is planning to provide promotion to almost 7500 employees in both middle and lower ranks. Talking to the media after the announcement of its quarterly results S.D. Shibulal, Chief Operating Officer and Member of the Board also said the promotions will be topped up by wage hikes. He said, "We have announced a wage hike of around 13-17 percent offshore and 2-3 percent onsite"

The company also plans to recruit 30,000 people in the upcoming financial year including 19,000 campus hires, 5,500 laterals, 2,000 overseas hires (in China, Manila, the U.S. and Europe) and the rest for Infosys BPO. Last year, Infosys started with 18,000 and ended up with 27,000. The company has already visited 300 campuses while moving towards bringing people in.

Infosys have seen extremely high attrition over the last quarter and most employees attribute it to the new HR initiative. There were reports mentioning the lost of 4000 employees in the month of February alone accounting for three percent of its total strength. Commenting on the flutter caused by iRace, Mohandas Pai, Head - Human Resources, Infosys said that the company believes in the new HR policy. 'iRace' will set a baseline and it will 'fit' people in a particular structure besides all the controversies. "We have addressed all the issues of employees in an open and transparent manner and it should be seen as a forward looking transformation exercise," he added. Pai also claimed that the company also provide several platforms for them to express their opinion on upcoming policies through websites, blogs, and review sites.

The attrition level of the company has also gone up drastically. Currently according to company sources the rate of attrition is around 13.4 percent. Infosys BPO has a major attrition level of 35 percent. Hence the company has decided to spend $134 million in salary hikes this quarter.

'Rent a CEO' concept catching up in India

Hyderabad: Experienced CEOs, HR heads and CFOs are being taken on lease for a period of six months to one year by firms, which are looking at experienced hands but are unable to afford the talent for a long term. The country's major headhunters say that while this is a prevalent trend in the west, it is catching up in India now, reports Roli Srivastava, TNN.

While 'temp staffing' is fairly commonplace in various industry sectors for junior and entry-level positions, firms looking at temporary CEOs and CFOs is a fairly recent phenomenon, they say. While there were some such placements about four years ago, Shiv Agarwal, CEO of ABC Consultants says that the demand for 'CFOs on rent' is a new trend that is picking up now.

"It is now becoming prevalent in India in senior and middle management level. At the top management level, it is not called temp staffing (or temping) but Interim Management. The money is fairly good and work is done on a milestone basis. It works for people who do not wish to be wedded to a company and are looking for flexibility," says E Balaji, CEO, Ma Foi Management Consultants.

Industry experts point out that such placements are particularly visible in MNCs that are setting shop in India. "There are a lot of MNCs who come to India but are caught in procedural delays in setting up their company and need a CEO and a CFO in place before the company gets started," says Sudhakar Balakrishnan, Managing Director, Adecco India.

A young man went to his grandfather's place to stay for the weekend. He was sitting down to lunch when he noticed that the spoons and forks were encrusted in a thin filmy substance.

He asked his grandfather,"Are you sure you washed it properly?"

"As clean as cold water can get it" was the reply.

So the young man shrugged and started eating.

The next day at breakfast he noticed that the plates were dirty and grimy. It also smelled a bit like dog.

Are you sure you washed it properly?"

"Clean as cold water can get it" was the reply again.

The man, a bit suspicious for his health, looked at his grandfather, than at his plate and started eating.

As he was leaving, his grandfather's dog jumped out in front of him, growled and generally blocked him from going forward.

"Cold water, leave the poor boy alone!" shouted the old man from inside.

Chinese hackers break into India's top secret files

New York: A new report called 'Shadow in the Clouds' by Canadian and American researchers based at the University of Toronto has revealed that a spy operation called 'Shadow Network' based out of China has tapped into top secret files of the Indian government.

Among the systems leaked out could be Shakti, the just introduced advanced artillery combat and control system of the Indian Army and the country's new mobile missile defence system called the Iron Dome, reports PTI. In the investigations conducted over eight months, the report claimed that systematic cyber espionage was carried out from servers located in China that "compromised" government, business, academic and other computer network systems in India.

The report finds that Indian government related entities, both in India and throughout the world, had been thoroughly compromised. These included computers at Indian embassies in Belgium, Serbia, Germany, Italy, Kuwait, the U.S., Zimbabwe, and the High Commissions of India in Cyprus and the United Kingdom. "These include documents from the Offices of the Dalai Lama and agencies of the Indian national security establishment," the report said.

Rising frauds in corporate India to be dealt firmly: KPMG

Mumbai: The overall incidence of fraud is rising in corporate India in the last two years and there is a need for Indian firms to deal with fraud risks firmly, according to the KPMG Fraud Survey Report 2010. The report also states that the financial services and consumer markets industry segments specifically, see a higher level of fraudulent activities within their industry, reports PTI.

"The need of the hour is for organisations to realise the importance of putting effective internal control mechanisms in place, so as to manage risks," KPMG Forensic Head, Deepankar Sanwalka, said. The survey indicates 'procurement' and 'sales and distribution' as the most vulnerable areas across industries susceptible to fraud risk.

Financial statement fraud emerges as a major issue for investors. An overwhelming 81 percent of the respondents of the survey perceive financial statement fraud as a major issue in India. "Accountability is no longer restricted to a company as a whole but also streams down to each and every individual. It has become imperative for companies to be vigilant and aware and not just act when fraudulent situations arise," he said.

Ineffective whistle-blowing systems, inadequate oversight of senior management activities by the audit committee and weak regulatory oversight mechanisms are the reasons for the growing worries as well as the increase in the number of frauds that one can see in the industry today, the report said.

"Managing the risk of fraud is essentially no different to managing any other type of business risk. All that it requires is resilience to combat that fraud," KPMG Forensic Executive Director, Rohit Mahajan, said.

Bribery and corruption have come to be viewed as an inevitable aspect of doing business in India by many Indian companies, the report said. Almost 38 percent of the respondents believe that bribery is an integral feature of industry practises and is most rampant in seeking routine regulatory approvals and to win new business from prospective clients, it revealed.

According to 53 percent of the respondent companies, e-commerce and computer-related fraud will be a source of major concern in the coming years with supply-chain fraud, a close second followed by bribery and corruption and intellectual property fraud, the report said.

However, whatever be the type of fraud, 75 percent of the respondents indicate that, except intellectual property (IP) fraud, fraudulent activities were perpetrated by employees, reaffirming that the enemy within poses the highest risk, it said.

Indian-American engineer to transform U.S. power grid

Washington: Although the U.S. power industry is one of the greatest engineering marvels, ageing technology and an increase in demand are creating problems for the power grid that needs fixing. Now, an Indian-American engineer is set to transform the way power is generated.

Venkat Selvamanickam, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston, is developing a technology with high temperature superconducting wires that is revolutionising the way power is generated, transported and used.

It is estimated that high-temperature superconducting wires could eliminate 131 million tonnes of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and offset the emission of the equivalent of 40 conventional power-generating plants.

"The country's electric transmission grid currently consists of about 160,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, with forecasters predicting an additional 12,900 miles needed over the next five years to meet increasing demand," said Selvamanickam.

"Superconducting power cables can transmit up to 10 times more power than traditional copper cables without the significant losses of traditional cables and are considered environmentally friendly," he added.

"The goal of my research is to modernise the power grid with high temperature superconducting wires to improve efficiency and reliability."

"Almost anything in the power grid -- cables, transformers, motors, generators -- can be more efficient if you use high temperature superconducting wires."

"Superconducting fault current limiters can enable uninterrupted power transmission when conventional circuits will otherwise succumb to outages in events such as lightning storms," said Selvamanickam, who did his B.E. (Honours) from Regional Engineering college, Tiruchi, India.

The applications for superconducting wires range from advanced medical imaging techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) to large-scale applications replacing existing copper wires with superconducting wires to raise reliability and cut costs.

"High temperature superconductivity has the potential to revolutionise the way we use electricity, just like the way fiber-optics revolutionised the way we communicate," he said.

"Our research pays immediate returns to the industry. It's not like something that may be useful 10 years down the line," Selvamanickam added.
