Who inspires you?

Amnesty International USA
We need a hero. Yours.
 We always remember our first.

I'm talking about the moment of our human rights awakening. When we realized a wrong had been done - to ourselves or to another - and felt compelled to make it right.

Whether that moment was yesterday or a lifetime ago, there is probably a person who opened your eyes and inspired you to rise up, speak out and defend basic rights.

Who is that hero? Recognize him or her publicly. Name the person who inspired you to care about human rights.

You can name anyone.

The icons. Martin Luther King, Jr. Aung San Suu Kyi. Desmond Tutu. The man who stood in front of a line of tanks during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

The defenders. Lydia Cacho, Rebecca Masika Katsuva, Yolanda Becerra Vega, and others working to protect the liberty and lives of those facing widespread human rights abuses.

Your circle. A parent. A coworker. Your high school civics teacher. The local activist who lit candles with you at a vigil. The Facebook friend who says, "Join me. Speak against this abuse."

Help us build a gigantic wall of human rights heroes - the people who lit the way, winning human rights battles large and small. Add your hero today and you could win a 2012 Amnesty calendar or the new Chimes of Freedom album.

Most importantly - have fun, be proud, and keep on being the world's strongest force for good.

Thanks for all you do.
